Perhaps it’s a cliché to pair spring with new beginnings, but it’s been true for me the past two.
In my 50s, I figured out the best word to describe myself—restless. My hands need to be knitting or drawing or writing. I can’t sit still for too long. Even when I walk, I tend to scurry instead of stroll. I flip and flop from project to project as crowds of ideas spark through my head. That’s why last spring, I started renting an art studio—a place where I could spread out, follow those ideas, and let them grow.
Studio 518 at Whiting Mills in Winsted, Connecticut, became that oasis for me. The little room in a historic brick mill, with worn floorboards, high ceilings, and tons of character, became the backdrop to explore my materials, ideas, and myself.
And now, one year later, I’ve grown so much that I’ve outgrown my space! Lucky for me, a larger studio opened up in the building, and I moved in. This spring begins with Studio 410 as my new home, with more room for projects, my shop, and my classes.
Of course, I am still restless, hopping from idea to idea, but now I have more room to flit and scurry. I also have spots to sit and settle and catch those sparks flying overhead. And I have room to share and collaborate with other artists.
If you want to find out about the work going on in Studio 410, sign up for my newsletter on the bottom of this page. I’d love for you to come by for a visit!
