Dana Rau
Multi-Media Artist and Illustrator
I explore, experiment, and seek adventure and challenge. I write, reflect, embrace impermanence, and play with color and texture. Layer upon layer, I build pieces of art while also building an awareness of who I am as an artist.
My sunny studio in Burlington, Connecticut, is my playscape. My materials are my toys. I take a spark—a color, a texture, an image, a written reflection—and let it lead me down an unexpected path. I tried not to let my perfectionist brain derail the journey or even ask where I was going. The process, not the product, is my priority. Art is simply the result of that play.
That is not to say I do not create with some intention. After the passing of my brother, who was blind, I considered art’s accessibility. So much artwork is labeled Do Not Touch, and its enjoyment is extended only to those with sight. So I have been creating pieces that are meant to be held or touched. My hope for these inclusive pieces is that all visitors can feel art—emotionally and physically—so that they, too, can feel seen.
